In Camogli, Italy, a seaside vacation for a young student
An attic for a seaside vacation for a young student, no matter how small and laconic it may be, should still be able to accommodate a group of friends.
Located in the seaside village of Camogli near Genoa, a tiny 35-meter attic is really a seaside vacation for a young student, a young economics student who lives and studies in Milan, visits Genoa for his studies, and comes to the village for the silence and pastoral views that you will not find in these big cities. He lives here alone, but he is a student and a student, to invite friends (and parents) – and on 35 sq. meters can comfortably accommodate up to four people.
The ingenious layout developed by the young architectural bureau Gosplan helped to achieve such a spaciousness in a small attic. A peculiar name for an Italian company, isn’t it? It is no coincidence that it sounds familiar to the Russian ear – this is a kind of recognition of architects in love for Russian constructivism in the person of Melnikov, Ginzburg and Leonidov, for the beauty of their laconic solutions.
There is indeed a kinship of aesthetics: the interior of the attic decorated by Gosplan is laconic, strict, geometric and constructive – each space here is extremely functional. According to the architects, they sought and found a compromise between creating a secluded minimalist design with a “living wage” setting and a trendy beach house in the spirit of Le Corbusier’s supporters. As we said, a seaside vacation for a young student.
Layout scheme of the apartment. The architects were asked to create a space with 2 bedrooms, a living room, a work and study area, a kitchen and a bathroom. And all at 35 meters! The solution was to create a spacious kitchen-living room, a comfortable bedroom with a double bed and a small “corner of privacy”, which can be either a guest bedroom or a room for reading and studying. In addition, the apartment has a good-sized bathroom with a shower and quite a lot of storage systems built into the interior partitions.
The attic is, in fact, the former attic of a fisherman’s house, hence the romantic old beams, which prevent the interior from looking very strictly urban. As well as magnificent views: the sea outside the window.
As is often the case in small apartments, the only chance to carve out space for the living room is to combine it into one space with the kitchen. So here, in the kitchen, there was a small folding sofa , and this immediately allowed her to look literally more hospitable: now there is where to receive friends.
Absolutely all the furniture here was made strictly to the size of the rooms – from the kitchen to the built-in sofa. Sometimes such savings on “millimeters” are the only possible way to make the most of the space.
The low ceiling height is not very suitable for chandeliers, some modern plafonds would not match the old beams, so the architects simply abandoned the overhead light, content with the local one – a large expressive round lamp above the table.
Two rooms are located behind the kitchen-living room. According to the architects, each room is like a piece of furniture. This definition is true even for entering rooms that mimic cabinet doors.
The most versatile “item” here is the study, which is also the guest bedroom on the right. Below, under the “floor” is the guest bed’s mattress.
If the bed is closed, the room turns into a study, where the window sill plays the role of a table. And the built-in wardrobe is perfect for the role of a rack for books and papers.
There is also a lot of built-in furniture in the “large” bedroom – in fact, there are no walls at all, some storage systems, indispensable in small apartments.
