A typical New York apartment, narrow, long studio with a couple of windows at the end, moreover, all littered with things brought from trips, looked very sad. A little imagination, a lot of calculations – and she turned into an exemplary housing for a modern man.
New York apartment was completely re-planned
“Perhaps you can come up with something with my apartment,” the client Michael asked the JPDA architects, who invited them to get advice on finishing. The architects looked around and realized that you couldn’t get off with the usual “repair” and offered to completely re-plan the apartment.
The problem is that the customer not only lived in a 45-meter studio of a rather unfortunate elongated shape with windows at the end, but also often worked in it, and also stored curiosities and objects of art brought from everywhere. As a result, the New York apartment looked not only small, but also cluttered. “It was like a student dorm room, Michael slept and worked here – but it wasn’t home.”
The main thing, the architects decided, is to design as many storage systems as possible so that the studio does not drown in things. By making a loft bed under the ceiling, they won a place for a comfortable kitchen and bathroom, and used literally every square centimeter for storage.
The architects had to work hard, scrupulously calculating the parameters of the prepared space, since they showed remarkable imagination, and also applied many techniques that are usually required for the design of small-sized apartments – the photos below demonstrate their successful solutions.
In axonometry, the central volume made of oak is especially readable.
As a result, the studio has become not only comfortable, but also spacious. The study is now a living room with a large corner sofa . So now you can not only live and work here, but also welcome guests with pleasure.
The New York apartment does not look cluttered thanks to its large, smooth and empty surfaces. For example, snow-white cabinets and a flat-panel TV built into a niche do not load the space in any way.
The working area is located right next to the window.
Michael works a lot at home and often on several projects at once and used to lay papers on the floor in order to be able to glance at them …
Therefore, the architects designed a table with several pull-out tabletops.
The entire central core of the apartment under the loft bed is finished in oak. As a result, this volume looks very sculptural and decorative, and not just functional. Directly under the bed is a dressing room.
Kitchen cabinet doors are made of the same material as the entire loft volume. It seems that everything is as if carved from a single piece of wood.
The kitchen in this small studio is quite decent in size: there are many cupboards and all the necessary equipment.
The bathroom is lined with narrow ceramic tiles that look like natural stone.
In the struggle for a sense of spaciousness, the architects chose a wall-mounted toilet: “the more the floor is visible, the freer the space looks.”
The studio also found space for Michael’s collections. Competently placed, they enliven the interior very much without cluttering it.
Space transformation is one of the design techniques for small-sized apartments: the photo demonstrates how the bed can be fenced off from the rest of the studio with the help of a roller curtain.
The architects took every chance to create storage systems.
