Accommodate a family is the target of each man
How to make three out of two rooms and place everything you need in an apartment? An atypical solution for a typical kopeck piece was proposed by the architect Elena Bulagina. A punching bag, photomurals, a “floating bed” and a fairytale city – in the project of a two-room apartment to accommodate a family with a child
In this article, I will talk about the planning solution and give examples of the interior of a two-room apartment in a panel house of the D-23 standard series. Designer – MNIITEP, house type – tower, 23 floors, ceiling height – 2.7 meters. Most of the walls in the house are load-bearing, which greatly complicates the work of the architect when developing a planning solution. External walls – three-layer panels with a thickness of 300 mm, inter-apartment and interior load-bearing walls – panels with a thickness of 180 mm, partitions – plasterboard with a thickness of 80 mm.
Design project of a 2-room apartment of 64 sq. m had to be performed for a young married couple with a child. When designing a planning solution in an apartment to accommodate a family, I set myself the following tasks:
1. Parents and child should be allocated a separate room.
2. Design a complete living room.
3. Turn the parent’s room into a multifunctional living space.
4. To increase the area of the bathroom for the proper placement of the washing machine and shelves for household items.
5. Insulate the loggia and convert the space into an additional resting place.
6. The balcony in the bedroom should be insulated and turned into a dressing room.
All these criteria will allow me to accommodate a family with a child.
Decorating the interior of a two-room apartment, I used contrasting colors: red, blue, shades of yellow and green, lilac and blue. Of course, if you use all of the above colors at the same time, you get a mishmash, so I chose a white and gray color scheme as a background color, and used bright colors to place accents in the interior. When developing a planning solution, I did not have to make changes to the capital structures, but the original layout was changed.
In the interior of the apartment, I gave a large role to the photo wallpapers, which are used in almost all rooms of the apartment and even in the bathroom. All wallpapers are different in theme, but in general they create an atmosphere of artistry and style, emphasize the bright and unusual design of the apartment. The project uses unexpected ideas for the interior of a two-room apartment. At first glance, these are materials that are incompatible in texture: photowall-paper, decorative bricks, porcelain stoneware under a parquet board, contrasting colors were chosen, but it was this combination that allowed creating a bright, energetic, modern, shocking and somewhat provocative apartment design to accommodate a family.
Firstly, I decided to divide the large room into two unequal parts by building an additional partition of tongue-and-groove blocks. I decided to use the resulting room with a window as a nursery, especially to accommodate a family. A walk-through room without natural light – for arranging a living room. When the partition was erected, the opening leading from the living room to the kitchen narrowed. But this turned out to be uncritical, since the opening remained wide enough.
To make the living room and hallway seem larger and give the impression of a single space, it was decided not to install a door between them, and the same cream granite was used on the floor of the hallway and at the entrance to the living room under the parquet board. The wall in the hallway was painted blue, on the left was a photo wallpaper showing the directions of cities, and on the right was a hanger in the form of a white tree.
I decided to combine the bathroom and the toilet, moreover, add there the area of the walk-through corridor, which previously led to the kitchen. Thanks to this solution, the bathroom area has increased from 5.8 to 7.8 sq. m, while we lost one passage to the kitchen. Now you can get to the kitchen and the loggia adjacent to the kitchen only through the living room.
But we get a spacious bathroom in which you can freely place all the necessary plumbing, as well as a washing machine measuring 60×60 cm, while without significant transfer of communications. A free space is formed above the washing machine, which we use for a utility cabinet with shelves. The body of the built-in wardrobe is made to order; we will use blinds as doors.
After joining the corridor area to the bathroom, not only the area of the wet zone increased, but also a niche was formed in the kitchen, into which it was possible to build two columns with kitchen appliances: a refrigerator, an oven and a microwave oven.
To illuminate the kitchen, I came up with several lighting scenarios. Above the dining table, I placed five multicolored drop lights as the main lighting. Hidden lighting was installed behind the wall-mounted plasterboard box. On the ceiling, I placed light guides that set the route of movement from the corridor to the loggia.
I decided to use the area of the loggia for arranging a rest room with a hookah and a mini winter garden. For this it was necessary to insulate the loggia, equip the floor with electric heating. The window opening between the kitchen and the loggia is dismantled, the battery is transferred directly to the loggia.
As a result, we get a wide passage from the kitchen to the loggia, the kitchen immediately becomes brighter. To separate the recreation room on the former loggia, I decided to install two sliding doors with increased sound insulation. Of course, the connection of the loggia must be agreed.
It was decided to carry out similar work on insulation and electric heating on the balcony adjacent to the parents’ bedroom. On the balcony square, I came up with the idea of organizing a dressing room. This decision is very correct, since a small bedroom is not cluttered with oversized wardrobes and at the same time all clothes are nearby.
I took the space of the bedroom free of wardrobes for the arrangement of a mini sports corner and a workplace. From the point of view of the stylistics of the interior of the bedroom, a red punching bag is perceived as an art object, and a work table turns into a dressing table in one movement, you just need to replace a laptop with a ladies’ mirror.
In the room of young parents, I decided to place not only a sleeping place, but also a mini work area and even provide a sports corner. Speaking about the project as a whole, I set myself the task of turning a typical housing with all the absurdities into a modern comfortable apartment, where everything is thought out to the smallest detail.
Choosing the style of the future interior, I started from the lifestyle of a married couple. Young parents, their energy and optimism, combined with an active life position, prompted me to create a bright, emotional, in some ways even provocative interior.
The ceiling in the bedroom remained at its original level, only along the window it was decided to make a plasterboard box in order to place the lighting behind it and place the curtain rods. The bed in the parents’ bedroom was chosen rather unusual.
The legs by the bed are shifted closer to the center, so the person standing next to the bed creates the effect of “hanging in the air”. To enhance the zero gravity effect, I put additional lighting under the bed base.
In the interior of the children’s room, I decided to use the theme of a children’s fairytale city. To do this, on the wall I used wallpaper and a clock, and on the floor I supported the same theme with a rug.
I placed the crib closer to daylight. I specially highlighted the area of the crib with a pale yellow light, lowered the ceiling a little and made decorative circles of different diameters, painting them in blue. The overall color scheme is emphasized by a beautiful bright chandelier.
The crib deserves special attention, the design of the furniture allows, over time, when the child grows up, to transform the bed into a desk, a bedside table and a wall panel with two shelves.
The bathroom interior deserves special attention. I decided to make a bright, unusual design here. I wanted the surprised “WOW” to be heard when entering the bathroom for the first time.
To do this, on vinyl, I printed an image of a rhino breaking through a wall to use as a photo wallpaper. On the ceiling, I make plasterboard drops for recessed spotlights. A glossy stretch ceiling combined with porcelain stoneware on the walls and a snow-white ceiling create a fresh, shocking interior.
The model of the washing machine was discussed in advance with the customers. Knowing the model and, accordingly, the dimensions of the washing machine, a niche was made in the bathroom, into which the appliances were built.
Also, in order not to lose free space above the machine, shelves were placed on which all the necessary household tools could fit freely. To prevent the contents of the shelves from being conspicuous, blinds were hung.
As you saw, accommodate a family is acccessible to everyone and you can let your imagination run wild !
